If Al Flowers shows up at a meeting, it's because someone has called him and let him know that they need the meeting disrupted. Generally, it's someone like Al McFarlane, who tries to maintain a veneer of respectability and likes to farm out the crazy shenanigans to people he doesn't care about, like Al Flowers. But all the poverty pimps call on Flowers whenever they fear that something productive might be happening on the Northside, especially if they suspect that one of their rival poverty pimps will get either credit or (even worse) public funds that they want for themselves.

So, the important question isn't "what kind of show did Al Flowers put on this time?" but "who wanted this particular meeting turned into a sideshow?"

I think its unfortunate you guys are trying to make this about race. This issue isn't about race. People of multiple racial backgrounds are on both sides of this issue. Try to remember that before you reduce yourselves to the lowest common denominator.

Incidentally, it is accurate. I don't care if Al is crazy or sane, that makes no difference to me. And the meetings Al sits in on are irrelevant to the subject at hand.

Why would anyone talk about another human being with such vile language. Al is the first person who will tell you that he's crazy, but he'll also have the courage and integrity to tell you what's on his mind while IN YOUR PRESENCE. If any of you knew what was really going on in the pits of poverty, marijuana would be the least of your conversation. Mr. Flowers sits in meetings you are not privy to, meetings about young people who are addicted to and desensitized by prescription drugs and a police state. If you think his Southside address should decide whether or not he is at the table as an advocate for a clearly underrepresented population, one would question your ideas of civic duty. You can disagree with him, you can dislike him, but you can't discount him; he was at the SAME meeting YOU were and you knew of him well before he forgot about you. Yes, I bought a house in North Minneapolis. I bought it over 6 1/2 years ago. Don't try to tell me how it is. Me and many others have been working to improve the quality of our surroundings. And over the past few years, I've seen dramatic improvements.

My neighborhood is not "very poor". Go to Gary, IN, or Newark, NJ, or New Orleans, LA; and check out those cities. That's where you can find the "very poor" neighborhoods. With that being said, this project will and IS scaring my neighbors.

This project will create a concentrated pocket of poverty that will insure the continuity of poverty.

I.I., have you seen the "century old homes" on this block? They're crummy. There's also a "Dream Home" and an ugly apartment building. The structures facing Broadway are also nasty. "Massive" parking facility? Hawkman, on his blog, seems to think that the parking might actually be insufficient. And "monstrocity?" I think the design, preliminary as it is, looks nice.

Your post strikes me as a knee-jerk reaction to something that makes you uncomfortable, namely social services. But, DUDE! You bought a house in North Minneapolis! Have you looked around you recently? You live in a very poor neighborhood. This project will be serving your neighbors, not creating a "cesspool vortex of biped vermin."
