Slumlord, Steven Meldahl; Former Property Demolished!
This blog thread posted by the Irving Inquisition uses some explicit language, as well as depicting some aspects of life in North Minneapolis that some readers may find objectionable. Reader discretion is advised.
Slumlord, Steven Meldahl; Former Property Demolished!
Finally! After seven years of rotting in the neighborhood, the pestilence that was 1511 22nd Avenue North gets reduced to the elements from which it came. Slumlord, Steven Meldahl used to own this property. “Used to” meaning that he never bothered to pay the 5-digits worth of VBR and property tax fees that had built up over the years. Eventually the municipality got the balls to take it away from him.
This is a personal victory for me too! I’ve had to look at that piece of shit every time I peered outside one of my front windows or whenever I walked out the front door. My gentle prods of our CM, Don Samuels, have yielded results and finally the former crack house that was burned from the inside out, is no more. Please, watch the video below and enjoy.
Witnessing the destruction of this dump was one of the happiest experiences in my life. I suppose one could say I have Lafawnduh Syndrome—I don’t know if I spelled that right, but I’m sure someone will let me know if I didn’t—but what it’s actually is Steven Meldahl Syndrome. This blogger isn’t just celebrating, he’s fucking rejoicing! Please, review some of this blogger’s past postings on Meldahl for a refresher. I look forward to your comments. Cheers!

I've turned into someone who has a hard time cheering demolitions (although I *do* look forward to 2222 4th St N coming down). Still, watching this video made me think that sometimes you can just tell a house WANTS to come down. Unlike, say, the Pauline Fjelde house, where the backhoe had to hammer away at the structure just to make a dent, this one almost melts at the touch of the backhoe.
I went through this place just over 1 year ago when the City was there to decide what to do with it and as you can see from the video it had all new framing, siding, roof, windows etc. What you could not see was the fact that it had new wiring, furnaces and all it needed was to be rocked and finished. By the way, the idiots at the City paid over 25k for it and assumed all their idiotic VBR fees etc on the place, according to the project manager. So now the City has over 50k in to a vacant lot, and they never mowed as often as the previous owner or shoveled the walks timely as the previous owner did. I also checked police records and there was never any criminal activity reported there, or any nuisance calls of any kind and it certainly was never a "crack house"! You have no clue what ever happened there.

The newer elements DD describes may well be what led to the structure coming down so easily. And personally I'm less attached to those newer items when it comes to a home being demolished or rehabbed. Those things can be replaced. Old growth lumber, leaded glass, and other such amenities just aren't made anymore.
And take this for what it is, but the scenario of the city buying a house for something in the $30k range, assuming all the fees and assessments, and spending another $10-20k on demolition is pretty much par for the course.
It's a shame that with houses worth only 30k to 50k in that neighborhood, the City can not build anything decent that will be a winning deal. The tax payers will take it on the chin again! thanks again Don Samuels!
Yea, WTF! I will bet anyone out there that it will remain a vacant for at least 5 years.... Any takers???
@ Anon 9:18, Don Samuels doesn't control property values. The free market and the economy controls that. Also, the city doesn't build houses. How could you not know this stuff? It's all common sense.
@ Anon 7:32,
I'm going to make a play to get that parcel of land. A person could build a really big house on that land.
The only chance you have is if you are a non profit - because it makes absolutely no sense to buy the lot for 50k (which is what the City has in to it), build a house for 150k (you now have 200k in to it), and it would be worth maybe 100k. Non profits are as bad as the government, they have no bottom line!
Thanks for doing the work of recapping all your Meldahl stories for those who might be just joining the tale.
Meldahl has been a bone for this blog to chew, and what a chewing he deserves. Don't let up. Keep up the good work. As you explained in your table top napkin graphic at Good Sports Bar, on Jim Wentzell Day:
Breaking the power of the slumlords is the key to EVERYTHING.
I've been having a lot of fun going through this document.

I bet if you go through the document very carefully, you will find a couple of Steve Meldahl properties that you've missed.
If there are any people out there that still want to see slumb lord steven meldahl taken out of the landlord business please email me mattier@hotmail.com I am willing to join your fight or start a new
