Neighborhood of Times Past—Part 1
This blog thread posted by the Irving Inquisition uses some explicit language, as well as depicting some aspects of life in North Minneapolis that some readers may find objectionable. Reader discretion is advised.
Neighborhood of Times Past—Part 1
This posting is going to honor the past, and reflect back on some of the memories in 2210 Irving before the slumlords took over; eventually leading to the property's demolition. New follower to this blog, Laurel Springman, grew up in 2210 Irving Avenue North. She was gracious enough to share with photos with me of the neighborhood from back in the day. In turn, I shall share them with all of you.

Laurel Springman's grandparents in front of 2210 Irving Avenue North in 1979.
The photo above dates back to 1979. As you can see by the picture, the house looks well kept, and there’s actually a yard… with grass… I’ve never known this property to have these features, so to me it’s like waking up in an alternate reality. The people shown above are Springman’s grandparents.

Pictures like these remind me of my own childhood.
This is little Laurel sitting in front of a door that leads to the front entry. As you can see, the house was up to date—for that time period anyway—with the popular thick orange-brown carpeting that used to be popular in those days.

It's hard to believe this kitchen doesn't exist anymore.
Laurel and her cousin are seen above in the kitchen—washing dishes I presume—back in 1977 or 78. The kitchen was renovated in the 60’s, but still had the woodwork. This appears almost timeless, because I’ve walked into a million homes not unlike 2210 Irving and have seen strikingly similar kitchens; even 30 years later.

Great Thread!
It is refreshing to see NoMi homes portrayed as functioning livable structures that provided homes for generations of happy and productive families.
No offense, but looks like the same types of folks that live up here now, only a different color!
@ Anon 10:47,
I figured it was only a matter of time before somebody would try to make this a racial thing. This is what the houses in the neighborhood were like before slumlords and thugs ruined them.
FYI...If that was a rental property, the owner would be required to fix the deteriorated steps, add 2 handrails, and weathestrip the front door! Standards are much higher for rental properties than for owner occupant homes. In fact, all homes including owner occupied should be inspected by the City!
FYI Anon 10:53 --- not back when this photo was taken. And yeah, you're willing to give up your personal freedom and allow the government into your home for an inspection? And pay twice the property taxes to fund that? And all the other impracticalities and illegalities. Geez, you're an ass.
Inspections are important for rental properties to protect renters from being exploited by slumlords. Even better would be a roster of bad tenants so those landlords who WANT to do good, can avoid the hell that comes with bad renters.
Now STFU --- you, too, 2/28 10:47 PM. Jackass.
To March 1, 6:14 pm. So why should tenants be discriminated against? Most homes in Mpls are rented - these are their homes. Look what happened in Red Wing. The city can not do inspections with out the tenant's approval. Why shouldn't owners be protected from their own stupidity? Most fires happen in owner occupied properties. FYI - I have been a landlord for 45 years and other than the weatherstrip, the codes regarding steps have not changed since WWII. I say, inspect all homes or none at all, you moron!
@ Anon 9:42,
You're a slumlord. You wouldn't complain about inspections if your rental properties weren't crap.
It's not the renters being targeted with inspections, it's the property owners! So your accusations of discrimination are stupid.
Further, being a renter, or being a landlord is not a protected class! Behavior (renting or owning) is not protected!
To I.I. I love inspections! That way I can educate these new inspectors on the code and the proper interpretation of it! My few properties that I still have left look better than almost all of the owner occupied houses that are near mine. By the way, I am a retired Mpls Housing Inspector.
I agree! I have 2 rentals over in Phillips and one in Camden. My houses, which are rentals, are also nicer than most of the owner occupied houses around mine. I say, "Inspect all Homes" Most of the home owners have done work themselves on their houses and do not have a clue how to do them correctly!
@ Anon 7:48,
You honestly believe your rentals to be nicer than the properties occupied by homesteaders? A little out of touch, aren't we?
How about you e-mail me pictures of your nice houses, and then send me pictures of your not so nice neighbor's houses?
I'm 68 years old and just started doing stuff on the computer when I retired from the City. I have no clue how to email pictures, but I could send some to you! Where would I do that???
Why shouldn't all properties be inspected? What is wrong with qualified Inspectors making sure that ALL homes, whether rented out or owned by nieve homeowners are safe to live in? I really do not see the difference. If we own or lease a car, we are still all subject to the same rules and laws!
Anonymous 10:47 knows nothing about the recent history of North Minneapolis..so shut the fuck up and go back to your racist ranting @jhg..jerks,hos and geekers.
