This blog thread posted by the Irving Inquisition uses some explicit language, as well as depicting some aspects of life in North Minneapolis that some readers may find objectionable. Reader discretion is advised.
1st Up: The Community
Let’s talk sociology. We are a community, and through walking whatever paths we have as individuals, have chosen to live here. This blogger moved here because the house I bought was awesome. It was for sale at a great price, and had so much potential. Five years and $50,000 worth of home improvements later, I still feel the same way. Why spend the money to fix the house? I spend the money to fix the house because the house is like a metaphor. It’s an expression of me; my taste, my station, my vision, and my values. I fix the house because I care; I care about all of those things I just mentioned. That way, when guests come over they can see that. It’s a symbol of respect for myself, my community, and the institution of home ownership. If you are a home owner living on Minneapolis’s North Side, odds are your house is pushing a hundred years in age. Like anything that old, there are going to be problems that need fixing. My house certainly falls into that category. There are a lot of things that still need fixing, and in the next five years each of those issues will be addressed and will probably cost another $50,000. Look at the video to the above. I had my house pressure washed to get the dirt off it, but also to get the eggs that the thugs, living nearby, threw against it.
Now feast your eyes on 1511 22nd Avenue North. This property was initially discussed in this blog’s first posting. Furthermore, it too is a metaphor. This house represents all that is wrong with the North Side. Let’s elaborate on that. The interior is all burned out, set on fire by an arsonist six years ago. Owner, Steven F. Meldahl, hasn’t done anything with this house since then. It remains vacant and burned out. The owner doesn’t care; the thugs that used to live here didn’t care, and up until recently, neither did the community. That’s all going to change. Why? Because I say so, that’s why! Those of us with a stake in this community are no longer tolerating this kind of apathy. My goal is to REMOVE people that don’t respect the normative rules of society—we’re talking about thugs here—from my line of sight and the neighborhood.
Detractors write in and call me a racist every single day. Thugs and thug-huggers love to call this blogger a racist. In fact, they shout it at me when I drive by. Ironically, I couldn’t care less what race people are. Here’s why they talk like that; it’s an excuse. People behaving like wild animals and the zookeepers that defend them call me a racist because this blog holds them accountable. If you throw garbage in your yard and the street I’m going to write about it. You blast your music in your ghetto ride; I’m going to write about it. You sell your body and sell drugs; I’m going to write about it. If YOU keep breaking the law I’m going to write about it. Finally, if YOU apologize and sympathize with people that don’t have the common decency to live like ordinary people, I’m going to write about that too.

The spelling, punctuation, and grammar are terrible. Here’s your grade—FAIL… Wait a minute; you guys did fail didn’t you? Do me a favor, when you write in to call me a racist, at least make an effort to communicate in English. I don’t speak Ghetto. Go away. Stop wasting everybody’s’ time with your rhetorical crap. You don’t even live here for God’s sake. Why don’t you take an interest in the communities you live in, instead of talking about mine? Seriously, I’m inviting you to leave. Go ahead and crawl back under that dark rock you came from, because nobody of note—everybody except for thugs—cares about what you have to say. You don’t like it? You want to call me a racist? Call me whatever you like if you think it makes you feel better. I couldn’t care less if this blog offends you. If you hate it so much, don’t read it. Why do you think there’s a disclaimer at the top of each posting? It’s there to explain it to the thug-hugging zookeepers that this material is offensive. I am glad that you are revealing some of the nasty stuff that people write. It really is unbelievable. I mean, it's one thing to argue a point, but completely another to spew idiotic vitriol.
I think the winner so far on my site was the comment about how [subject of a post] was going to "f**k [me] in the *ass."

There's another interesting sociological factor here, which is generational. Gen Y homeowners, of whatever race, who are moving into the neighborhood just don't buy into the same racial dynamic as the previous generation, and they aren't subject to the same kind of emotional blackmail that the baby boomers were. Those tactics are just played out. Gen Y'ers just have a much more cynical attitude toward B.S. in general, whether it's coming from corporations, government, or the local demagogue down the street.
A demagogue's sole interest is in setting up his own rusty little citadel of power, by fostering divisiveness and squashing anything that looks like it might have a positive effect on people's actual lives or promote integration of the Northside with the rest of the city. The only power base they've ever learned how to appeal to is a disenfranchised, segregated community. Since they don't want to learn new skills, they're dependent on keeping the community disenfranchised and segregated.
To Gen Y'ers, old-style demagogues like Randy Staten and and Don Allen are just irrelevant, not because issues of race have gone away, or because Gen Y'ers aren't interested in addressing inequity, but because nobody is interested in what these boring, narcissistic old men have to say. Outraged entitlement doesn't look any better on narcissistic sputtering old Black men than it does on narcissistic sputtering old White men.
Wow!! This is well written post and comments. I particularly like the Gen Y perspective. After all, it is the behavior we disagree with in the community. Most of unacceptable behavior is criminal anyway so I oftentimes don't get a lot of the thug-huggers' points. As for the egging of your house, that crosses a line. It’s vandalism. It’s also anarchistic. The degradation at 1511 22nd Ave is how we as a community have let absentee property owners get away with not taking care of their properties. That's changing for sure! There will be other “inquisitions” on other blocks soon.
To Anon 1:25, please feel free to start your own "inquisition" blog. From the looks of it, "the cause" could use some voices from Thomas or Queen.
Kids raised on South Park and hip hop aren't going to grow up to give a free pass to anyone who spouts a lot of nonsense, just because it's allegedly p.c. nonsense. If something doesn't make sense, or if it seems pretentious and self-serving, they're going to ridicule it mercilessly.
I had to take a moment to applaud you on your blog! I've forwarded links to my friends in the north mpls neighborhood who happened to already know about your blog, we all love it! You are absolutely correct that people need to be accountable for their own actions and for their property. Keep up the great blogging, great photos and great stories! II, you have a great house, a fabulous house and you have made it into a super nice home. We all have those large wells of positive feelings for our neighborhood and most of us have pretty similar stories and reasons for why we live here. We have made good friends, we enjoy so much of what NoMi has to offer, we enjoy being volunteers either formally or informally to band together and make things around us better.
Those positive feel-good things are mostly what I try to cover on my blog at nomipassenger.blogspot.com.
And every day while we are trying to enjoy our homes, our parks, our backyards and our community gardens we endure gun shots, crime scenes, open air markets for drugs and sex, open air defecation and urination, trash, trash and more trash, major noise intrusions from boom cars, large crowds of teens or young adults heck, sometimes grown adults gathering for a fight in the street or a house party that ends up in a shooting, etc - and we are just supposed to allow this to go on around us??? The house full of little Hispanic, Hmong, black or white children on the corner are just stuck with this kind of environment because they are poor and don't have many options?? I DON'T THINK SO.
And then, when we speak up, push for changes, call out bullshit behavior, organize, organize, organize, write stories about small victories or major events, rally behind political candidates, etc then we are supposed to endure a small handful of malcontent stalkers who stalk, harass, taunt, lie, defame, stalk, obsess, stalk, rally behind L3SOs, stalk, harass, stalk, defame, lie, stalk, taunt and obsess about us because we don't want our neighborhood filled with lawlessness, indecent behavior and life or death danger??? I DON'T THINK SO.
It ain't happenin'. Pick another hobby people. You aren't going to come out on top. Nobody has yet:
-restraining order against Drother - FAIL
-defamation against Jordan Three - FAIL (likely to end in disbarment of at least one attorney)
-multiple legal attacks on JACC board - ALL FAIL (likely to end up in $190K legal fee judgment)
-restraining order against PJ Hubbard - FAIL
-Lawsuits and restraining orders against JACC members and Johnny Northside by L3SO - MAJOR FAIL (ended up with court sanctions)
-Defamation lawsuit against John Hoff & 1 other - NOT LOOKING SO HOT FOR PLAINTIFF

Oh yes, I left out all the major loses in the political arena that these folks have tried to play in. The wind just isn't blowing that way.
Obsessively blogging about (private) home repair items, personal finance items, family court matters, showing up with a video camera at a family court hearing, calling childish names, photo shopping images, making up false stories and lies, chasing people on the street/sidewalk like the damn paparazzi, making the most idiotic video with a damn Barbie doll, making a creepy lunatic video with a talking "white baby", all of this is not doing anything to 1)stop the revitalizer activists 2) make northside a better, stronger community 3) make the folks responsible for this beyond childish behavior look like they have an ounce of sense and credibility. It's all going to make the revitalization movement stronger and push public support and opinion towards the activists that are being targeted. Much like we see happen in major political campaigns when an attack ad crosses a line and creates a swell of support for the attack victim.
Every day I ask myself “If we live around gun-toting thugs, confront drug dealers and hookers, work openly with the police while gang members observe and take note, what makes these people think they will have an impact on us revitalizing or not revitalizing?”

Keep the discussion focused on the behavior, not the person. How would you respond if this situation was brought up in a community meeting?
Do you think anyone should buy obviously used, maybe stolen property from someone off the street? Should you call the police? How does "We watch, We Call" play into this?
Let's have a legitimate discussion without name calling, backstabbing and insults.

No, it is clear that you simply want to criticize JNS. And, let me tell you something: I don't agree with everything he says or does either. In fact, I disagree with quite a lot of it. Nevertheless, focusing on the dumb small things like his purchase of a street item detracts from the larger issues at hand. Which, I suspect, is exactly what you are trying to do.
Perhaps we need to talk more about the "behavior" called trolling.

{Steve} Renner went to court yesterday in Minnesota to seek a restraining order prohibiting (former employee) Donald Allen from harassing him. The order was granted after Renner asserted Allen tried to extort $100,000 and had engaged in a pattern of abusive behavior, including raising “havoc” with employees, threatening “to destroy him and his family,” posting libelous and defamatory material on the Internet and engaging in verbal harassment.
Allen also was accused to taking pictures of Renner’s offices and employees without their consent.
“[Allen] has attempted to extort $100,000 from Petitioner’s businesses [and] if not paid will go to the FBI and Secret Service,” Renner asserted.
A judge ordered Allen not to harass Renner, not to have any contact with Renner and to stay away from Renner’s home. The judge also ordered Allen to stay one “city block” away “in all directions” from Renner’s businesses in Minneapolis.
Should Allen violate the order, he could be arrested, jailed for up to 90 days and fined up to $1,000, according to the order. Subsequent violations of the order could result in stiffer measures, including the filing of felony charges that could land Allen in jail for for up to 10 years and force him to pay a fine of up to $20,000.

There was something written on JHG the other day about Eric Johnson -- asking him to step down from the Hawthorne board -- that caught my eye.
The way it was written - specifically, "It is at this time that The Jordan Hawkman Group is challenging Mr. Johnson to make a move for the good of the neighborhood and step down to be replaced by an African American" - caught my eye.
The wording sounds exactly like what Al McFarlane said to George and Bev Roberts when he started pushing them out of WHO. I was told that he said something along the lines of "We appreciate the effort you've put in to bring WHO this far, but we challenge you to step aside for the good of the neighborhood and let the neighborhood [meaning African Americans] take it from here."
Don Allen is buds with Larry Tucker (who sits in on Don's radio show), and Tucker is buds with Al McFarlane.

Steven F Meldahl is a dirt bag slumlord he also owns a property on my block. This property has caused nothing but problems. Minneapolis needs to start cracking down on these absentee landlords. I encourage everyone to 311 even the minorist details it is the only way to create pride and safety in our neighborhoods.
